SC HOME Decorating Tips

• Both Tara and Dayna recommend that you purchase good quality artificial garlands and at least a few very high quality decorations. These will last for years and can be built on a little at a time. Collect pictures of what you like to help your designer tie your deco- rating together. You don’t have to have a lot of money to decorate, just a sense of adven- ture.

• •

If you can’t use nails when hanging garlands, use adhesive-backed adjustable hooks that can be removed safely without destroying your walls or mantle. They are strong, unob- trusive, and readily available in hardware stores around town. Picture hangers also work.

If you’re using groupings, place them first, down from the top of the tree to the bottom to see that they are balanced. Then begin to fill in the open spaces on the tree with your other decorations.

• Tie bows a little lower down from the top of the tree so it doesn’t look like the tree has- donned a hat. Three big bows back to back work better than one for a really dimensional look. Use wide ribbon to fill in, but bring it really deeply into the tree as well as out to the edges.” Burlap is trending this year. Burlap ribbon, fabric, and skirts around the base of the

of small succulents and frosted pine, are tied together with pipe cleaners or chenille stems, and formed into a small bunch fastened to the tree as a decoration. It’s a stunning highlight in among the shiny glass Radkos and cherished child- made ornaments. A similar look uses flowers. Add poin- settia or magnolia or even rose groupings instead of succulents. Simple, easy and stunning holiday displays that last for three months and all the winter holidays

with just a tweak or two sounds like a dream come true for those of us who say, every year, “Ok, this year I’m really going to decorate up right”. 

tree, with burlap bows on the tree top are perfect for a casual, old-fashioned look. Add tons of sparkly white mini-lights. Pair burlap with a more contemporary color palette. Black and white checks look clean and sophisticated when mixed with burlap.

• Highlight children’s creativity by using their hand-made ornaments as well as their art- work to make garlands for the tree, mantle, or above a window. When Dayna’s children Lexi, Bella and Jax were younger, Dayna enlisted them to decorate the family tree. They enthusiastically jumped in, placing their favorite ornaments all along the bottom of the tree. Dayna didn’t touch it and it remains one of her favorite memories to this day.

It’s Not Too Late Both Dayna’s and Tara’s clients start calling in mid-summer to set up their decorating

appointments. But it’s never too late to call either. Both will do their best to fit new clients into their decorating schedules, whether it’s for a traditional decor or something with a twist. With their help, this is the year to decorate up right.
