Trying to prepare your own taxes can feel a bit like a do-it-your- self mugging and it can lead to costly trouble and hassle if done incorrectly. The IRS can take up to 3 years to mail one of their love letters. That can add up to years of penalties and in- terest before you even know there is a problem. Then you’ll really feel sick! us self-prepared taxes raise the same eyebrow in today’s lending environment. Don’t expect to get a loan of any sort by providing self-prepared tax returns. What about renting a home or an apartment? Many landlords require copies of tax returns as income verification. Don’t lose out to another applicant because your return looks less legit being self-prepared.
I’ll have another! Record-keeping may not be your thing. If
you self-prepared, maybe you didn’t even keep a copy of the return you filed. Remember, in case of an audit, you must be able to back up everything in your return. If you filed online you may not be able to access a copy anymore. Look for a tax preparer who is open year round and can provide a copy of your return when you need it (and help you respond to those love letters.)
