he first annual San Clemente Surf Classic held At T-Street Beach on October 18. Open to San Clemente and Capistrano Beach Residents, was put on by the San Clemente Chamber of Commerce to promote San Clemente businesses and to celebrate the surfing lifestyle of
San Clemente. The Surf Classic was professionally judged and professionally announced by highly sought after
surf commentator Dave Schulte who is known as the “Vin Scully of Surf Commentating”. The event also featured computerized live scoring, which is typically only seen in professional surf con- tests.
City Council Person and Mayor Pro Tem, Bob Baker, attended the event and was on the second
floor of the judge’s tent to witness the inner workings of the sophisticated operation. An expensive contest to produce, the San Clemente Sponsors were relied upon heavily to cover
the costs for an event with this high level of production. Title Sponsor, Stance, provided a pair of socks for every single entrant (about 150) as well as
socks in every “schwag” bag for the finalists in each of the ten divisions. Dragon was the presenting sponsor providing the beach bag containing all of the goodies as well as a pair of sunglasses for all division winners.“Grom Sponsors” were Republik of Kalifornia, Catch Surf, DSC, 1Law, and Dr. Adam Crawford. Division Sponsors were Terry Senate Surfboards, Melia Homes (home builder for Surfer’s Row), Rainbow Sandals, Rincon Real Estate Group, Love Surf, XM Surf More, Fight Strong MMA, Sonny’s Pizza, and Crook’s Surf Essentials.
