De-stressing - 5 Simple Ways C

by Jackie Ruka

ontrary to what you might believe living in sunny California, seasonal blues can creep up on you as daylight time shrinks and holiday demands begin to mount. Many of us mistakenly view this as stress, with common signs of feeling sluggish,

sad or grumpy, fatigued, or over-weight. According to Psychology Today, about 10 million Americans experience Seasonal Af-

fective Disorder, or SAD, the most common form of winter blues, which occurs in late fall or early winter. Some experts say it’s related to certain hormones deep in the brain that trigger an at-

titude-related change. The hormone, serotonin, the feel-good mood enhancer declines and nerve pathways in our brains that regulate moods can result in feeling the winter blues. (Should you experience SAD, you may want to seek an assessment by your doc- tor.)

The way to mentally, emotionally and spiritually turn that frown upside down and

enjoy seasonal bliss may be by determining the choices we make. Here are five simple ways:

1. We are born to be happy No matter what time of year it is, your happy seed needs some positive attention.

Self-care, rest, relaxation and making good choices requires putting your needs first. To stay powerful you must be positive and surround yourself with those who lift you up.

2. Go play Give yourself permission to do what you love, at least a few times a week. From creating

to sports, pets, music and quality time laughing with friends; do more of this to stay in your happy zone.

3. The power of Oomph Every immune cell in your body has the power to kick up the activity of white blood

cells. Those Pac men-like cells gobble up viruses and bacteria. To stay physically strong, what you eat can work against you or for you. Choose to fill up with healthy foods first, which leave less room for sugary holiday temptations.

4. Get your butt in gear Exercise is a natural vitamin to stay healthy and feeling young. Endorphins improve mood and those who exercise every day for 30 minutes enhance their life.

5. Get out of the house sooner Enjoy as much daylight as possible as an alternative method to achieving more light in

your life. Perhaps those Christmas lights have more magic then we realize. Stress is a very common factor in today’s busy world. By proactively managing stress and

well being you can intentionally begin to create meaning and pleasure in your life and feel excited about the holidays and the New Year to come.
