Southern Oregon Fall Foliage, the Arts & History


all on the East Coast has nothing on Southern Oregon, especially in the small towns of Jacksonville and Ash-


land. With a palette of brilliant yellows, or- anges, rusts and browns Mother Nature is doing some of her best work there, turning the foliage into a forest of color. Life is different in this area, simpler, slower.


Deer and wild turkey roam freely unafraid on the highways, byways and city streets. Forests, open markets, food co-ops, organic farms, cat- tle ranches and wine vineyards are in abun- dance. Historical buildings and Victorian cottages house govern- ment and local busi- nesses and eateries. Long walks, mountain hikes, or time spent dozing in tree-hung hammocks are the order of the day, while evenings find visitors dining and strolling the quaint city streets serenaded undiscov- ered musicians of the night. small towns has a uniqueness of its own, but they do share one thing in common … the hippies. The ‘60s


are alive and well there, and the street people inhabit the forests, parks and sidewalks, gath- ering daily to chat, play music and sleep. For the most part they keep to themselves, but their presence does add a unique charm to the sim- plistic living available there.
