Community Pharmacy Service Initiative

LLOYDS PHARMACY Newbuildings

The Rural Area Partnership in Derry (RAPID) describes itself as consisting of representatives from community organisations, statutory authorities, the private sector and special interest groups and its primary objective is: To halt the social and economic decline of the rural communities within the Derry City Council Area and to enable these communities in partnership with all interested parties to devise locally led strategies to facilitate sustainable social, economic and cultural development. RAPID established the Healthy Ageing Network in Derry in August 2013, one of its programmes, Fighting Fit! is a pharmacy led initiative aimed at improving the physical and mental wellbeing and reducing the isolation experienced by people aged 60+ living in rural areas. Fighting Fit! is funded by Building the Community Pharmacy programme.

LISBELLAW MEDICAL HALL Lisbellaw

This initiative as a community pharmacy was raising and eventually getting a defibrillator on the pharmacy wall for the community. They are one of the first pharmacies in Northern Ireland to get a defibrillator. Neighbouring communities have followed this lead and have started to introduce defibrillators. The team organised an information and training night for staff and members of the community. As well as providing training on the defibrillator to the community they also provided CPR training. Because of this training the people who have attended have a better awareness of defibrillators which they have shared with families and friends including their children.

MCMULLAN’S PHARMACY Belfast

McMullan’s Pharmacy is tasked with carrying out MUR for both Respiratory and Diabetic patients. Currently, the service offering from pharmacy does not align with the service requirements within GP practices. This project shows enthusiasm and commitment to the enhancement of an essential service in community pharmacy in Northern Ireland delivering exceptional quality above and beyond what is expected. Through passion and determination the process has succeeded resulting in a very important breakthrough for CP practice as the Pharmacy can now claim to offer a robust patient orientated and outcome based review process that is fit for purpose and can be standardised across the whole Health Board going forward.
