Welcome

Killian Johnston UCA President

T

his is my final Pharmacy in Focus Welcome as UCA President. It has been an

eventful time for me as President, it has definitely been an eventful time for the profession, and that looks set to continue.

With the continuing emergence of practice-based pharmacists, it is definitely an exciting time for the pharmacy profession.

Combine this with the excellent work being done by pharmacists across the ICPs, we can look ahead to a period full of possibilities and opportunities.

I hope as a profession we grasp it and move forward, cementing pharmacy at the forefront of patient-centred care.

As professionals we have so much to offer, and now is the time to make sure people sit up and recognise the excellent care that pharmacists already provide, and as these new developments progress, for the profession to ensure it builds upon this strong foundation and adds to it.

There is no doubt that the care that community pharmacies provide at the heart of every community is undervalued by everyone, except our patients.

At every turn, it feels like the huge effort put in every day by our teams across the country is ignored, and undermined. That is why we should not be afraid of these new opportunities.

It gives the profession a chance to shine, a chance to show other professions exactly what we can do, and why we are the best at what we do.

We are highly trained professionals with a vast range of

clinical and analytical skills, yet at the moment we are totally underutilised.

Hopefully these are the first steps in pharmacy taking it’s rightful place.

To finish, I would just like to thank everyone who has supported me during my time as UCA President. Adrienne Clugston and all the UCA office staff, Stephen Slaine my Vice-President, and all the UCA members on the Executive Committee.

I would also like to thank the UCA membership for their continued support of this Association, our trade colleagues for their help and support for the work we do for members, and all those individuals and organisations who are working along with UCA to develop the pharmacy profession.

And of course, Profile Publishing, for their excellent work producing the Pharmacy in Focus magazine & diary and the Presidents Ball & Pharmacy in Focus Awards. I hope to see many of you on 30th January.

During my time as UCA President, I have learnt a lot, experienced a lot, and made some great friendships.

Thank you for the opportunity, and the best of luck to Cliff McElhinney of Urban Pharmacy, Belfast, as he takes over as UCA President.

I believe he will do a wonderful

job and will continue to lead the UCA and our members forward in the right direction.

PRESIDENT Killian Johnston

OPERATIONS MANAGER/SECRETARY Adrienne Clugston
