MediCare, in which UDG Healthcare has a minority stake, is not part of the deal. The American multinational will first await approval from European Union competition authorities.
A spokesperson for AAH told Pharmacy in Focus that the deal sees McKesson, a global, market-leading pharmaceutical wholesaler and distributor, join forces with parts of UDG’s business, including Sangers, that are known for being innovative and experts in supply.
“It is a compelling union that we believe will result in benefits for patients, pharmacists and the wider
pharmaceutical market. It’s our clear intention to bring together the best of both organisations to provide the wider Irish market with a world- class offer.”
When questioned about anticipated reaction they added, “As a larger group we will be well positioned to provide further benefits to the manufacturing and pharmacy communities across Ireland. We’ve been encouraged by the initial response from people who recognise the opportunities the acquisition may offer them in the future.

Kris Fortner denied any conflict or disruption. “We do not believe there to be any potential conflicts,” he said. “In fact, we are acquiring these leading distribution businesses in Ireland to complement our wider portfolio. We will maintain and enhance the businesses we are acquiring, whilst seeking out further opportunities for growth that reflect the changing demands of the modern healthcare system.
