CHARITY FOCUS That little bit of help – from Age NI
MORE THAN 10,000 CALLS FROM OLDER PEOPLE, THEIR CARERS AND FAMILIES ARE TAKEN BY THE AGE NI ADVICE SERVICE EVERY YEAR.
Their four local advisors, based in the Belfast office, provide independent, confidential support on a range of issues including care, health, housing and money.
Brenda Kearns, Head of Advice says, “10,000 calls a year is staggering number of people in need, but the reality is that we could be helping even more people to live a better later life across Northern Ireland. Many older people here lead fulfilling and independent lives. That picture however is in contrast to the later life experienced by many others in Northern Ireland.
“Four in ten people tell us that they struggle on their income and more than one in ten people skipping meals to cut back on food costs.
advisors identified £1.2 million in unclaimed benefits and this year with the support of UCA we can ensure that an increasing number of older people can access the help they need.
“All too often people don’t know who to turn to for ‘that little bit of help’. Age NI is here to listen and support. Calls to the Advice Service vary from a simple query about benefit entitlement, to more complex issues such as age discrimination and problems with health and social care.
“One of the services we offer which helps hundreds of people every year is a simple benefits check. It’s free and confidential. Many people don’t know about the financial support they are entitled to. As a result millions of pounds go unclaimed every year in Northern Ireland. Last year Age NI
“An easy way to ensure that more people know about the Age NI Advice Service is to distribute our cards (pictured). If you are speaking to someone you feel might benefit from our support, pass our card on. The comment we hear most often from the people we have helped is, ‘I’m so glad I lifted the phone to Age NI.’ By passing on our number you could positively change someone’s life.”
The Age NI Advice Service is available on freephone 0808 808 7575 seven days a week, 8am – 7pm.
