Thinking of working in the Republic?

Post pre-reg exam, many newly qualified pharmacists may consider starting their careers in the South which is currently experiencing a shortage of pharmacists at all levels of experience.

Due to a recent relaxation of the rules concerning the number of retail pharmacies that can be opened, many new pharmacies have opened over the last decade resulting in a noticeable increase in demand for pharmacists. This new market dynamic is ideal for newly qualified pharmacists who now have a broad range of opportunities to choose from. However there are a few things UK-trained pharmacists need to watch out for when considering practising in the South.

Firstly, the regulatory environment is different in the South and pharmacy professionals need to be registered with the Pharmaceutical society of Ireland. Pharmacists working in the South for the first time will notice that because generic penetration is not at the level currently achieved in the UK, being familiar with branded medication is important.

Another change many pharmacists notice is the difference in the range of pharmacy-only medications. And while the volume of items dispensed in Irish pharmacies can often be much lower than in a typical UK pharmacy, there is a significant increase in the both the amount of drug schemes encountered and paper work generated.

Due to these differences it is important that pharmacists actively engage in formal training and/or shadowing before they start practising in the South. Many pharmacists may not have connections in the South so it makes sense for them to contact a locum agency to aid with the search for training and work experience.

One such agency is Clarity Locums, whose managing director Anthony O’Neill, will be happy to offer training advice and information on work placement opportunities that are available to Pharmacists starting out. Anthony is a pharmacist himself and faced the similar issues after completing his training in Manchester some five years ago.

Clarity Locums is Ireland's leading locum pharmacy agency, is run by practising pharmacists, and offers a highly efficient, responsive service. Many of our clients are very happy to facilitate new pharmacists looking to shadow alongside an experienced pharmacist for a number of days.

We also have an on-site dispensing system training centre where pharmacists (both new and experienced) can learn about a particular dispensing system or get help migrating their knowledge to a new system. We have openings for pharmacists for both locum and full-time positions in the community, industry and hospital pharmacy sectors.

If you have any queries on anything to do with working as a locum in Ireland or if you would like to do some shadowing work with one of our clients before, give the Clarity Locums office a call on +353 (0)1 532 5441 where you can speak to Anthony O'Neill MPSI.
