This instrument measures current in the pico-ampere range and charge down to nano-coulombs. As a pico-ampere meter it may for instance be used in photoelectric effect experiments (determi- nation of Planck’s constant). With the matching ionization chamber, it can show the weak currents which passes through air when alpha radiation makes it slightly conductive. As a nano-coulomb meter it is a most versatile tool for a lot of electrostatic experiments. The charge integration occurs within the instrument at close to zero voltage, virtually eliminating leakage currents. With a Faraday ice pail and a metal plated ball on a rod, a very persuasive demonstration of electric induction is possible. Another application is determining the capacitance of a plate capacitor with or without a dielectric between the plates. Full scale ranges: ±5, ±50, ±500 pA. ±5, ±50, ±500 nC.

Demonstrate the ionization of air by alpha particles with this ionization chamber in combination with 4410.30 electrometer and an alpha source (like 5100.10)

Plate capacitor Used with our 4410.30 electrometer and a high voltage sup- ply like 3660.50 to study the properties of plate capacitors. Comprising an anodized aluminium disc 150 mm diameter, mounted on an insulating plastic rod 10 mm diameter, with Ø 4 mm contact holes. To avoid stray capacitances, simply build the capacitor as shown with a stand base (e.g. 0006.00) and dielectrics or spacers (4316.00/4318.00) – purchased separately.

Dielectric for plate capacitor PVC plates for building plate capacitors with a dielectric. The 6 plates make distances between 2 and 12 mm possible. (Rela- tive permittivity of PVC is around 3 to 4).

Spacers for plate capacitor Use three small stacks of these spacers between the capaci- tor plates when building air capacitors. The spacers are made from the same material as 4316.00 but with negligible area compared to the capacitor plates. Thus identical plate distan- ces can be obtained with air as dielectric.
