These Things I’m Telling You Leigh McRae

Paperback 146 pages ____

This enjoyable little book is filled with characters that McRae has known in his life, and their stories come wrapped up with delightful and sometimes profound spiritual lessons. In amongst these pages we meet a number of individuals whose lives have something to teach, to inspire or to uplift us.

We meet Dulcie, a woman of faith who spent her whole life in service to others and who, just before her death, said, “I can’t wait to open my eyes and see Jesus”. We meet Lloyd – the man in the shiny shoes – who teaches that hope is what carries us, followed by a willingness to do what has to be done. Along with Dulcie and Lloyd we meet many more real life people and learn how their lives have touched others – by extension, we learn that we can do the same.

The beauty and the joy of this book is that it inspires us to action: to make the world a better place, to go out in pursuit of our dreams and even to make small gestures every day that reach out and touch the lives of others. These Things I’m Telling You is subtitled “Little Stories, Big Meaning” and that’s a perfect summation of the gifts it presents.

Heaven on Earth Tania de Jong

Music CD (50 minutes) ____

Heaven on Earth is a like the ‘greatest hits’ of the heavenly songbook. This extraordinary recording is a revelation, as skilled soprano de Jong performs original songs, cover versions and impresses with her own reinventions of some of the greatest music and songs of all time.

With stunning original adaptations of Beethoven, Pavanne, Mozart and Dvorak, de Jong combines her own original lyrics with the beautiful scores of renowned classical music composers. And amongst the all-time legends of Western music there are some unexpected moments from the East too: a stunning rendition of Peace Om Shanti makes a surprise cameo towards the end.

‘Somewhere’ from West Side Story is a swoon-worthy

standout, as are covers of ‘Summertime’ from Porgy and Bess and the iconic ‘La Vie En Rose’ by Edith Piaf. The crystal purity of Tania de Jong’s voice is a marvellous delight, and she breathes new life into old standards.

Heaven on Earth is a remarkable fusion of classical, contemporary, spiritual and world genres: it’s the perfect soundtrack to a long hot bath or a cosy night wrapped up in front of the fire with a fine glass of wine.

Aboriginal Dreamtime Oracle

Card deck and guidebook ____

Aboriginal Dreamtime Oracle is a wonderful, locally-produced oracle deck. As can be expected, the artwork is evocative and visually stunning, as it is heavily influenced by the richness of indigenous culture, art and Dreamtime stories.

The cards themselves are a tactile wonder, made of a good solid card stock that also features a gold gilt edging. They are easy to handle and have a reassuring solidity in your hand. The enclosed guidebook is an excellent resource, and adds an extra dimension to the art of interpreting the cards.

Each card has a theme that corresponds with a short Dreamtime story, rich in thematic metaphor and serving as powerful fables which illustrate the central message of each card. It is indeed a very unusual oracle deck, and this uniqueness makes it stands out.

The only other thing I would have liked was some suggested uses or a small selection of recommended readings. Despite that minor critique, Aboriginal Dreamtime is a fantastic and unique addition to the oracle deck genre.
