though, as I was choosing the titles, picking the topics and reaping the benefits of continuous improvement, I couldn’t put some titles down. Especially once I realised that people who worked with me could feed off information that I had digested late the night before. I went back to school to study management in my mid-

twenties and found the experience completely different now that I knew I wanted to be a business leader. When I was at school as a teenager my dream was to play football or golf, and my focus was beer and girls. I learnt how to set goals and when I found out that the average

millionaire was 57 years old, I realised that I still had time. If we work from 20 to 70 years of age, we have a career that

spans 50 years. If you’re 30 years old, you have only worked 20% of your working life and have a whopping 80% to go. If you’re 45 years old, you still have 50% of your working career ahead of you.

If you want to earn more than you do today, then do more than you’re paid for. Most people miss out on opportunities to earn more money because the opportunity is disguised as hard work.

Every opportunity you get to take on more work, do it. Even if you’re swamped with your current workload. Taking on more amplifies your worth. Get better at your tasks or delegate. If you study the 80/20 rule, or Pareto Principle, you will be able to focus on the 20% of your current tasks that provide 80% of your results and delegate or simply ignore the least important parts of your role. Every promotion I’ve had was given to me by the same

person: me. Start promoting yourself. Too many people sit around and wait for an opportunity to climb the corporate ladder when all that you need to do is a little more than you’re doing now. A great time to stand out is when your manager is away. This is a time you should always aim to excel, as it really gets noticed. If you can perform better than normal without supervision it opens the paths to more freedom and opportunity in your role.

AUGUST 2015 39

My promotion to CEO came when my Managing Director went on a trip to Europe and I was a National Sales Manager. In those few months, rather than work on my golf swing (it needed it), I started earlier and finished later. I read books to improve my coaching sessions and sales meetings and made sure that I led my team, rather than over-manage them. Sales in those few months doubled, which gave the MD peace of mind to extend his trip by a further three months. When sales didn’t fall away after his return, he recognised that I had just promoted myself to CEO without the title or package, and the decision for him was pretty simple thereafter. When I take leave I always encourage my team to show me

what they’re really made of. When I am away it’s no surprise to me that 90% of my team’s performance falls off. They start later and finish earlier. It’s a good thing for you that most people behave this way. There are a lot of people going nowhere in this life, and they

seem to be the ones that want to take you along for the ride. Get away from time wasters and distractions. When you’re at work, you work; when you’re at home, be at home with family and friends. I see too many people doing social activities at work and being only 80% effective, and then when they’re at home with family or friends they are dipping in and out of emails, or worse, stressing about work. If those people were more focused at work they’d perform better and would have less to worry about when they finished for the day. Self-discipline is the ability to make yourself do what you

should do, when you should do it, whether you feel like it or not – the ability to force yourself to do what you should do! n
