1Know what you want

It sounds so obvious doesn’t it, but

you would be amazed at how often I hear people say what they don’t want – ‹I don’t want to be overweight›, ‹I don’t want to be stressed›, ‹I don’t want to be unhappy› – and, while that’s great, what you really need to know is what you are actually aiming for. If you don’t know what you’re heading towards you’ll go nowhere. If you want to be in control of your life

you need to build your goals first and then aim for them. Saying ‹I want to be a healthy weight›, ‹I want to be calm and clear›, ‹I want to be happy› sets you on the track to achieving your goal because you are moving towards being happy rather than moving away from being unhappy. Your brain now knows what it’s working towards and looks for ways to make it happen. So, figure out what it is you want long

term as well as on a day-to-day basis. Have an intention of what you want to achieve each day, how you can build on the results of yesterday, what you

are aiming to achieve, and what would make this a great day for you. Too many people just float through life taking whatever comes to them. If good things happen it’s a good day, if bad stuff happens it’s a bad day. Often people have no mastery

over what happens in their day – it kind of just ‘happens’ to them. It is critical that you know your goal, because in life we tend to get what we focus on, to the extent that, if you focus on a problem, you’re going to get more of a problem.

What’s going to happen if you start to shift your focus on to what you want to achieve? You are going to empower yourself to create what it is you want; you are giving your brain something to focus on and obtain.

Whether you’re using this first step in business, relationships, sales, or life in general makes no difference. It’s the

universal rule that if you know your goal and you move your focus to the outcome you will improve your results. Granted you won’t get the results immediately; maybe you’ll need to persist for a bit, but it’s going to give you more of an opportunity to get the results you are looking for if you first identify what it is you want rather than waiting for what shows up in your life.

2Take action There can be no substitute for

action – a dream without action is just wishful thinking. You’ve got to be willing to act and to get out there. You need to be willing to take steps and build momentum. We learn in NLP that motion creates emotion. If you have no motion, or action, you are going to have some pretty ordinary emotions taking place inside you. If you build up momentum and take action you are giving yourself the opportunity to develop some great feelings within you; and these positive feelings propel you forward even more.
