GHBA’s Q2 REPORT CARD > HOW ARE WE DOING? Your Association at a Glance

The GHBA staff is always busy looking for ways to improve member services, advocacy and education. Following is a quick look at what the association has been up to lately.

Benefit Homes

Perry Homes completed construction on its Benefit Home in Bridgeland on a lot donated by The Howard Hughes Corporation. The beneficiaries this year are The Alzheimer’s Assoc., HomeAid Houston and Texas Children’s Cancer Center. Perry Homes held a Vendor Appreciation Luncheon in May and presented the donating vendors with appreciation plaques.

Castletree Homes, partnering with Land Tejas Development, broke ground on the second Benefit Home of the year in Miramesa in July. We are excited to have Castletree Homes and Land Tejas on board the Project and are looking forward to another successful GHBA Benefit Homes Project that will give back to three deserving charities.

Membership

Membership continues to grow in 2015 to over 1,650 members. GHBA added 100 new members and renewed over 300 members in the second quarter of 2015.

Special Events Mid Year Forecast Luncheon

Over 750 guests attended the Mid Year Forecast Luncheon in June and left feeling good after listening to the encouraging news Dr. Mark Dotzour delivered. More housing starts are needed as people are still buying, with no end in sight.

The annual scholarships were also presented during Mid Year. Each year, the GHBA Associate Council awards scholarships to students whose parents are members of the association. These scholarships are made possible through the generous donations of our members. Thank you to all our donors who make these awards possible! This year, five deserving winners were presented with scholarship checks in the amount of $3,000. Read more about the winners at ghba.org/news

20 Government Affairs

Codes and Standards On April 28, the Codes and Standards Committee met to review the City of Houston’s response to changes to the 2012 IRC. Following the meeting, a GHBA subgroup consisting of members from the Codes & Standards and Government Affairs committees and In-Town Builders Taskforce, led by John Williams from KHOV, compiled research supporting maintaining a 3 ft. fire separation distance in the City, as opposed increasing it to the 5 ft. mandated by the IRC.

After submitting technical justification to the Houston Code Enforcement Office in support of maintaining the 3 ft. code, we heard back from Sheila Blake that the City has decided to approve our justification and keep this particular code requirement as it is. This was a great win for the GHBA and COH builders!

HOME-PAC

On June 11, a group of about 40 HOME-PAC Trustees convened to screen five front-runners in the City of Houston’s Mayoral race for their endorsement. The PAC voted to endorse Steve Costello, founder of Costello Engineering and longtime GHBA member.

Councils & Committees Associate Council

Associate members learned the “Do’s & Don’ts of Effective Marketing” at the April meeting.

The production builders were back in May with indispensable tips for associates. Special thanks to Austin Eaves, Perry Homes; Mireya Gordillo, Greeneco; and Gary Free, CastleRock Communities.

In June, the associates welcomed custom builders: Katy Hawes, Jamestown Estates; Andrew Foote, Partners In Building; and Bo

Butler, Butler Brothers Construction.

The annual BABA Fishing Tournament was a huge success with 52 teams of hopeful anglers competing on a beautiful day in May at Floyd’s on the Water at Harbor Walk.

Bay Area Builders Association

In April, the Bay Area Builders were excited to get the scoop on “New Building Trends” by Kathy Anderson, owner Eklektik Interiors. Members also got an important update on the new NAECA water heating regulations presented by Renae Turnbaugh with Rheem Water Heaters.

In May, more than 100 members came out for the annual BABA Forecast Luncheon, presented by Scott Davis, Metrostudy regional manager.

A highlight of the spring was the BABA Fishing Tournament and Crawfish Boil, held at Floyd’s on the Water at Harbor Walk on May 8. A record 52 teams competed for top honors. Congratulations to all of the winners.

Custom Builders Council

The CBC held a record breaking meeting in April with over 85 builders in attendance for the bi-annual TAB contract seminar. In May, CBC moved to its new, larger location, the Norris Center, where a panel of energy experts shared tips for building a healthier and more efficient home. June was a highly attended meeting featuring the CEO of Builders Digital Experience (BDX), Tim Costell, a leading digital marketing provider for over 1,000 nationwide.
