Ben gears up for charity E

ngland and West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Ben Foster (pictured) is pedalling his way back to fitness from a

serious knee injury – while helping Geoff Thomas raise £1million for Cure Leukaemia, Birmingham Chamber’s chosen of charity this year. Ben was taking part in Geoff’s ‘London2Paris’

(L2P) cycle challenge and hopes that his sponsored ride will bring in £50,000 for the charity. Ben, who called on Baggies fans to help him hit the five-figure target, was due to be among 230 amateur cyclists on the 500km route, which is providing the 32-year-old with a way to step up his rehab. The former Manchester United player,

who is on the long road back to fitness after suffering cruciate ligament damage in the Baggies’ 1-0 win against Stoke, is aiming to return to action in October – and he says joining Geoff on his 80- mile-a-day ride will boost his chances of meeting his comeback target. “The challenge will be fantastic for

my rehab,” said Ben. “I got the cycling bug about two years ago and you can see me out on a random night cycling around in full gear. But I’ve never done

anything like this before – never 80 miles a day on four successive days!” Also taking part is Stuart Insall, owner of The

Cure Leukaemia has thanked members of Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce for their support and a major donation. The Chamber raised

Edgbaston and its sister-hotel The Kenilworth, who said: “The ride will be tough – but it is in support of an exceptional cause.” Stuart is also supporting the charity by hosting a cocktail master class. Geoff, a leukaemia survivor who played for

Wolverhampton Wanderers from 1993-1997, is celebrating his tenth anniversary of being in remission by holding two major cycling events during the summer.
