AFTER SCHOOL STUDY – getting some extra help
With class sizes getting bigger and more pressure on teachers and schools to achieve league table targets, some parents worry that their children are not getting the attention that they need to flourish.
Even in smaller classrooms, teachers cannot always give all their pupils the attention they need.
But there are alternative ways for
teachers to teach and children to learn, such as education centres and home tutoring. So it’s no surprise that private tutoring is so popular these days.
The prime benefit of supported
learning is that it helps students to go further with their education so that they can reach their full potential.
Students can also benefit because study becomes easier and more fun and they can start to feel the enjoyment of learning through working at their own pace.
Children can learn the strategies of
successful learning, which can be used throughout their school career as well as in the future.
They can also become more confident in the ability to learn which will help in other areas of life.
Kumon
Rachael Gleeson-Howe has been running the Maidstone West Kumon Centre for the past 20 years and has seen students grow and blossom. Some have completed the Kumon programme and become classroom assistants before going off to university, while others have aspired to become doctors, teachers and promising professionals.
Kumon’s focus is on mastering the core skills in education and beyond, working alongside the school curriculum to build core skills in any key subjects.
Kip McGrath
Kip McGrath Maidstone East Education Centre provides children in Maidstone and the surrounding communities with private tutoring in English and maths, with assistance in reading, spelling and comprehension to students who are having difficulty with their school work or just want to do better.
This takes place in a positive learning environment with modern equipment and resources through the use of proven teaching methods with online learning resources and activities for children delivered by qualified and experienced teachers.
Staff try to ensure a child enjoys coming along to the
centre. They say: “We do this by training our fully qualified teachers the art of bringing out the best in your child by their friendly manner and encouraging tone. It all happens in a bright friendly centre. Your child will enjoy coming and have fun at the same time as learning. Their goals are to improve the child’s confidence, making learning fun and engaging and help students reach their full potential.” The lessons consist of small groups with one-on-one tutoring and Kip McGrath are offering a familiarisation week so children can get to grips with the 11+. This will be August 24 for one week including five sessions. Call for details.
Rachael explained the centre’s long-term aim is to enable
students to cope comfortably with maths, English and other work at school and throughout life. She said that by giving students a solid understanding of the fundamentals of these subjects and in many cases enabling them to progress beyond their school level, children feel happy and confident at school.
In maths, whatever the topic or exam, a child will need
strong basic calculation skills and (in secondary school) a solid grounding of algebra. Kumon aims to help students develop a superb number sense and unrivalled mental calculation ability. Multiplications, fractions and algebra are among the key skills, which receive thorough attention.
The Kumon programme also focuses on core skills in English that are vital for exam success. With writing, success will depend on the breadth and depth of vocabulary, how widely read they are and their ability to construct grammatically correct sentences. Rachael said: “The Kumon programme focuses on exactly these skills, providing your child with the skills they need to tackle any school English exam.”
Children can learn the strategies of successful learning, throughout their future.

If you are a parent, you may recall that time at school when you dreaded certain lessons. You wished someone could just take the time to explain from scratch so it would start to make sense. Private tutoring can help children to look forward to going to school rather than dreading subjects that may otherwise be too hard.
