Plumbing Considerations in an Older Houston Home NUTS & BOLTS OF REMODELING SERIES


Instructor: Jason Gartman Date: Wednesday, June 17 Time: 4 pm to 6 pm


Content: Every remodel presents a unique set of challenges. Learn what to look for in each of your upcoming projects. For example, Pre-War homes in the Houston Heights, Montrose, Wards, Eastwood, Inner Loop have probably had some previous plumbing work done. Be wary of code issues and learn the telltale signs of “bootleg” work.


Postwar through the 1970s, be on the lookout for lead joints in the kitchen and bathroom sinks, and poor quality galvanized pipe. Homes built in the 70s and 80s will have more copper supply lines, and you’ll see cast Iron soil pipe giving way to ABS and PVC. Learn how to spot poor workmanship in condo units.


Attendees will also get an update on the new water heater sizes and codes that went into effect this spring.


Energy Code Update 2015

We’ll also discuss the 2009 and 2012 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) and what’s new for the 2015 IECC. Proposed changes to the City of Houston’s 2012 International Residential Code (IRC) will also be highlighted.
