Houston Remodelers Council Renovates the FamilyTime Crisis Center

C

“Courage doesn’t always roar, sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day that says, I will try again tomor- row,” is the wisdom that hangs above the door of the FamilyTime Crisis Center in Humble. Founded in 1977, FamilyTime's mission is to “provide an outreach pro- gram and accessible services to families and individuals in crisis through counsel- ing, crisis intervention, information and referral, and shelter.” In 2014 alone, 733 victims of domestic violence were provid- ed with emergency shelter services from FamilyTime, and hopefully, the courage and ability to “try again.”

For the bathroom renovations, the Remodelers Council installed new cabi- nets, countertops, ceramic flooring, sinks, plumbing fixtures, tubs, shower stalls and toilets. Handrails and transfer seats were added to enable handicapped residents. All walls were painted and new lighting was added including a tunnel skylight to add natural daylight.

The residents’ kitchen was remod- eled with new cabinetry, countertops, backsplashes, three refrigerators, one dishwasher, and a new sink. All the walls were painted; new lighting and a tunnel skylight were added. The busy staff cook’s kitchen was vastly improved with a new double oven, a vent hood, sink, faucet, industrial shelving and modified lower cabinets for easier access.

The results were dramatic: "The renova- tion of the shelter kitchens and bathroom by the Remodelers Council was a dream come true,” said FamilyTime Director Judy Cox.

The kitchen manager, who prepares meals for up to 30 clients every night, stated, “Thank you for all your hard work for the shelter. The double oven works wonderfully, making cooking so much easier, and the exhaust fan over the stove with shiny, even light, helps me to see better.”

The shelter clients, who watched as the rooms were renovated, expressed thanks: “Thank you for remodeling our temporary home. It’s nice to know there are good people everywhere.” And, from another client, “We are so excited about the new kitchens and bathroom. We are all grateful for people like you who help others without getting anything in return.”

The members of the Remodelers Council would argue that they received quite a lot in return, and are looking forward to the next charity project.

On April 24, 2015, volunteers from the Remodelers Council of the Greater Houston Builders Association, led by Council board member, Sherry Pruitt of Whodid It Designs, renovated two kitchens and a large bathroom for the Crisis Center. Members of the Remodelers Council and the GHBA donated all of the materials, services and labor.
