were told at the opening of the 2015 Alphega Pharmacy UK Conference, which was held in Telford last month.

Attended by more than 350 delegates, including Alphega Pharmacy members, the annual conference provides attendees with an opportunity to hear about new services and solutions being developed by Alphega Pharmacy and designed to help pharmacies grow their business.
Caitlin Sorrell, Managing Director of Alphega Pharmacy Europe; Sue Moore, General Manager of Alphega Pharmacy UK, and a number of leading manufacturers also attended the conference.
In her address, Sue Moore told delegates that as well as the three core business elements that combine to create a successful customer proposition for independent pharmacies – dispensing, professional services and retail - the “chemistry for success” is reaching critical mass and leadership.
“Alphega Pharmacy exists in order to bring independent pharmacies together and create something very powerful. My job is to make sure Alphega Pharmacy members in the UK can come together to form a critical mass and achieve standards of business performance which no independent pharmacy could achieve on its own,” Moore told the audience.
“As owners of independent pharmacies, Alphega members have a crucial role to play in providing customer-focused leadership, which can transform your pharmacy from being good to being great.” Over the last year, Alphega Pharmacy UK has developed a range of additional services and support tools to help its members deliver dispensing, professional services and retail in their independent pharmacy in a way that enables its members to bring better health and wellbeing to patients and consumers, and maximise their business returns.
These include: 1. A pilot programme called PERFORM that involves a series of integrated visits from Alphega Pharmacy’s Consultant Pharmacist, in-depth
he two key elements to success in independent pharmacy are leadership and critical mass, members
training for team members, the promotion of locally commissioned professional services and accreditation as a Health and Wellbeing Pharmacy, a mark of quality awarded by Alphega Pharmacy. Five pharmacies in North London took part in the pilot and initial results show a rise in income from professional services of 37 percent, an increase in items dispensed of 4 percent, and an increase in retail sales of 13 percent.
2. Development of a staff profiling tool to help members understand how their current staffing compares with optimal staffing based on dispensing, professional services offered and retail sales.
3. The launch of the Alphega Pharmacy Retail Partnership, following a successful five month pilot, to help members grow their retail sales. The service provides members with full, free access to practical retail planning skills and supplier relationships, normally restricted to larger chains, without losing the benefits of their independence. Results from the 20 pilot sites involved in the retail partnership since its launch showed a retail sales increase of up to 25% and now more than 200 members have already joined the service.
Alphega Pharmacy is also launching a new leadership development programme later this year, designed by occupational psychologists, especially for members. The programme explores two leadership philosophies, mindfulness and empowerment, and how combining the two can have a transformational impact on the staff that pharmacists lead in their business. •
