Community Pharmacy Scotland (CPS) entered in earnest into negotiations on the 15/16 settlement at the turn of the year. The process has been challenging, lengthy and has not yet been signed off. As is well published in the national press, NHS resources are at a premium and community pharmacy, while being an important deliverer of NHS services, is not immune to the fi nancial pressures being experienced in other areas of the NHS. CPS makes no apologies for attempting to strike the best possible deal for the pharmacy network despite all this and we are continuing to make the case for a fair settlement to meet the increasing demands contractors face to deliver safe and effective patient care on the frontline.

Members of CPS and the Executive Team have been attending various fora to ensure the community pharmacy voice is heard loud and clear. The Public Health Review being conducted by Scottish Government has had CPS input, CPS is also widely represented on the Out of Hours Review due to report in September of this year and we continue to represent member’s views in other areas including the recent RPS/NES Prescription for Excellence (PfE) Conference, development work with GPhC and skill mix in community pharmacy.

The recent bi-annual CPS Council meeting was held at Dunkeld. Two PfE joint leads, Frances Rooney and Ian Rudd, presented on their ‘Building Capacity’ work stream and the engagement was welcomed by the Council with positive two way interaction. More

engagement with members in this way would be welcomed to answer questions around PfE and develop a common understanding of how the community pharmacy network can contribute to the aspirations of the pharmacy strategy. Council members clearly had an appetite to contribute and engage in this area and refl ected the views of network members across the country.

On a note of collaboration I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome the new Chief Pharmaceutical Offi cer, Professor Rose Marie Parr who started on the 1st of June. Rose Marie is a well-respected and well known leader in Scottish pharmacy circles and CPS will be looking to work with her and other pharmacy stakeholders to ensure that the pharmacy network and profession can play a signifi cant role in supporting the health of the nation. It is a challenging role for our new CPO and we realise that support of CPS and other pharmacy stakeholders will be required.
