An old box with a cellophane window, standing on its side, can become a fi sh tank. Children can cut shapes of fi sh, seahorses and octopi, to hang on thread inside. Shiny wrappers from sweets are good for this.

The same box can be a museum setting for collections. During a walk, tell the children that they will make an exhibition when they get back, so they must collect treasures and interesting things. You may put a limit on the number of objects.

their own objects, or dictate what to write about them. Items can be stuck down for keeps or changed for diff erent shows – woodland fi nds one week, the next week postcards, stamps and buttons.

Make a beach picture inside a shallow box. Use sandpaper for the beach, crumpled blue tissue for the sea, and cotton wool for breaking waves. Collections of small shells could be added.

Have you ever had the urge to do something outlandish, like go shopping in your pyjamas, or turn up for work in a pair of Speedos? Well, now you can – hopefully without being arrested! – whilst simultaneously earning money for charity!

Children can label

Since 2003, the Wallace and Gromit Charity has been raising funds for sick children in hospitals and hospices throughout the United Kingdom by encouraging people like you and me to show up for school or work wearing their wackiest clothes.

Over the past fourteen years, Wallace and Gromit’s Wrong Trousers Day has raised over £2 million which has been used to help buy specialist equipment, fund arts, music and therapy programmes, provide family accommodation and off er respite care.

The charity’s aim is to ensure that whilst in hospital and hospice care, children can still play, socialise and recuperate from treatment in a child-friendly environment. Every £1 donated by wearing the wrong kind of trousers helps them achieve just that.
