Dunblane Primary’s
Ski Experience! In February this year, Primary 6 pupils from Dunblane Primary School got the chance to go on two ski trips.
to Firpark Ski Centre and the second was scheduled to be at Glencoe.
However, due to bad weather conditions only one class made the Glencoe trip. Luckily, the classes who didn’t make it to Glencoe were able to return to Firpark for a second visit. an amazing experience and we all really enjoyed it.
It was
Each class visited Firpark Ski Centre, Tillicoultry, on different days. We were in the changing room, with boys on one side and girls on the other, and one by one we were measured up for our skis and helmets. Catherine, one of the instructors, demonstrated how to put our ski boots on safely and then we were off! When we got to the slope, we put our skis down and pressed our shoes down until we heard a click. We were asked to ‘fall over’ carefully, then taught how to get back up (because that happened a lot!). We advanced up the hill a little more each time and we were soon half way up – it didn’t look steep from the bottom but it was very different when you were looking down. We had to keep climbing up the slope and then, once we had been taught how to turn, we were allowed to use the tow. The tow was really fun but we soon learned not to lean back – some people learned the hard way as they fell off!
Due to the high winds and snowy weather, two classes were not able to visit Glencoe. However, one lucky class made it to the snow covered slopes. After a long and tiring two hour bus journey, we jumped out of the bus. We were all a little disappointed to learn that we weren’t able to scale the mountains due to the blizzard conditions. Nevertheless we were still excited, and got our skis and started on the dry slope (which was covered in snow so wasn’t dry at all!). We were taught lots of cool tricks and we all made excellent progress – our teachers were so impressed. The winds picked up and became so strong that they were sweeping us off of our feet. Lunch was brought forward and during this time the teachers discussed going home early. Then the winds died down a little and we were able to continue. We had a fantastic day at Glencoe and, even although we were freezing, the day was a great success. This was such a great experience and we all enjoyed it so much that it was something we will never forget. We are thankful for this experience and many of us look forward to returning to the slopes next season.
