Newton Nursery Class
As part of our ‘Finding Out’ Context we focused on science and learned all about our 5 senses. Some of the activities we have been doing to learn more about these include:
Tasting: a variety of foods have been on offer to taste and we have been discussing what foods we like the tastes of and what foods we do not like the taste of. We have mixed some flavours to make new tastes – some we liked, some we did not like. We also experimented in a blindfold taste challenge to see if we could identify the foods without looking at them. “Eww I don’t like that lemon – it tastes yuck.” “I do like the spicy crisps – they are fizzy on my tongue.” Hearing: we listened to a variety of sounds to try and identify these, some were harder than others. We used instruments to distinguish low sounds and high sounds and tried to put these into order. “Babies make loud noises – I don’t like it.” “We can hear the wind – why can we not see it?” Sight: looking through sun glasses, coloured plastic, magnifying glasses, discussing why some people wear glasses and others cannot see at all. We have used blindfolds to mimic how this may feel. Touching: we have explored a variety of textures and are describing how these feel. We have explored things to put our hands in: shaving foam, ‘gelibaff’, gloop, paint and play dough. “The shaving foam feels silky, soft and smells like my Dad.” Smelling: we have used tubs with different smells to see if we can identify just by smelling, some are very hard.
We ended the context by inviting parents and carers in to share our learning. Some of the children’s comments: “I liked to show my Mum – she liked the smelly stuff.” “Me and my Mum liked the box you had to feel.” “My Gran liked the tasting – the ketchup was good.” “We could make a loud noise with the tubs.” “The magnifying glass made my Mum’s face so big! When we looked through the colours the nursery looked different.”
Some feedback from parents/carers: “Great experience to see what the children have been learning.” “A very useful and enjoyable event. We both really enjoyed the activities, thank you for inviting us.” “Great experience – I really enjoyed the smelling test. Very good way of exploring sciences.” “It is always very good to be involved with the children’s learning and to see how we can continue this at home.” “Very good fun. My son and I enjoyed going around the different stations. He was thrilled to have Mummy participating in his learning.” “Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.”
