Before Madonna and Sting promoted it, Ashtanga yoga was a relatively unheard of style of yoga but from the moment I embarked on it as a student of Drama at RSAMD in Glasgow in 1997 I felt fully alive and energised in a way I never had before. Enthused and curious to learn more I travelled to Mysore in India in 1999 to study more deeply the Ashtanga system with its founder Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and his grandson Sharath. This was to be the fi rst of many subsequent journeys to India to train with my teachers.


Sri K Pattabhi Jois, then in his nineties and still teaching, started practicing yoga with his Guru, Krishnamachrya when he was twelve years old. In the 1960’s the fi rst of Pattabhi’s European students travelled to India to see him. Soon his infl uence spread and students from all over the world came to learn from him at his Ashtanga Yoga Institute in Mysore. When I fi rst started practising at Pattabhi’s Institute over a decade ago I had never experienced anything like the teaching I encountered in Pattabhi’s crowded 15 feet by 30 feet room. The space was fi lled with the intense, concentrated energy of over a dozen sweating bodies working hard under the eagle eye of Guruji. It was here I learned the core components of Ashtanga Yoga.


Perhaps the most central and core practise in Ashtanga is Vinyasa which means combining breathing and movement –for each asana or movement there is one breath. For example inhaling while raising your arms over your head and putting your hands together is one vinyasa. Exhaling while bending forward and placing your hands next to your feet is another. Vinyasa creates sweating which has the eff ect of detoxing the system and the practise of Vinyasa also heats the blood. Heating the blood thins it and creates ease of circulation and a healthy, purifi ed body. The breathing in Vinyasa is long and even. This type of breathing increases heat in the body burning away impurities as described and strengthening the body and mind.


Over the next several years I worked on developing my yoga practice with various teachers worldwide. Feeling confi dent and strong in my practice I returned to my home town, Edinburgh, in 2002 where I set up my fi rst Ashtanga classes. In 2006 I received certifi cation

from my teacher Patthabhi Jois and was the fi rst teacher in Scotland to achieve an authorisation to teach the Ashtanga method.


My style of teaching is disciplined and informal, sincere and joyful. Whilst Ashtanga could be described as a strong and alpha form of yoga, I believe that this style of yoga can also be feminine and soft. I try to mirror this in my practice and teaching style.


I have opened a new studio in Bridge of Allan- The Wee Yoga Room - a boutique centre for yoga, healing and massage. The Wee Yoga Room is a little den of zen set in the hustle and bustle of Bridge of Allan’s high street. Here you will fi nd classes in Ashtanga yoga, Hatha yoga, Pregnancy yoga, Lazy Daisy Birthing and Baby classes. Alongside the Wee Yoga Room is The Wee Healing Room which so far off ers Reiki, deep tissue massage, hot stones, Indian head massage, pregnancy massage, aromatherapy massage and refl exology.
