Equi-Trek’s 3.5 tonne horseboxes are increasingly popular, as that company’s Managing Director Tom Janion explains: “The 3 5 tonne market is increasing hugely because of the licensing, as anyone with a car licence can drive one, but the single biggest change relating to the sale of new horseboxes has to be the introduction of European Whole Vehicle Type Approval, which basically means horsebox manufacturers have to comply with the same strict rules and regulations as car companies do. It’s a big undertaking and we are proud of the fact that we were the first to get ‘type approval’ for our vehicles.
“It gives the customer confidence that the vehicle they are getting complies with all the regulations and it is also standardising the manufacture of a horsebox. Yes there are still some loopholes, but it’s much better than it used to be and we are hoping it will tighten up in the future. “What it means in practice is that when you buy a horsebox, it will come with a certificate detailing its type, including the weights, dimensions and more. When you take any vehicle for an MOT in the future, that type should match the vehicle. So if your horsebox has previously been a refrigerated box van, the
document will say so and in the future, you should be refused an MOT for it!
John Barlow confirms: “Most of the Equi-Trek range will be available on our hire fleet and depending on the model, hire terms can be anything from single days, weekends, weekly, monthly and for the bigger models, longer term hire will be offered.
“The response to the first few 3.5 tonne horseboxes on our hire fleet has been phenomenal and like all of the Equi-Trek range, which will be in our showroom from early April, they comply with the most recent safety standards. Our staff have been
fully trained to Equi-Trek’s requirements and will be able to advise on all the options.”
John concludes: “Like any business, we’ve got to listen to what our customers want. We’re only really well known in equestrian circles for horse trailers, but we do absolutely everything else and because I have a really solid interest in horses myself, I take a big interest in providing what our customers are asking for.”
