tried ‘n’ tested Toggi – Barbury

VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Performance Glove The company says: Ergonomically designed stretch Cross Country style glove designed to help keep your hands warm and dry, whatever the conditions, whilst providing excellent grip. Featuring a technical stretch fabric on the palm and back, with a neoprene cuff and adjustable wrist strap for comfort and protection. Black. Size: XS – XL. RRP: £12.50 www.toggi.com

Our tester, Sally Burns, says: Extremely comfortable to wear. They gave a good grip on the reins and are not too bulky so that you can’t feel the reins, or so thin that your skin gets rubbed. I tried them on leather reins in the rain and sleet and my hands did not slip and still maintained a good grip. Also I noticed that my hands did not sweat in them either. After being wet they dried really well, did not become faded and kept their shape. I will definitely be buying another pair.

Carrots – Competition Gloves

The company says: Made from slimline, lightweight, super stretchy and durable fabric, they are ideal for riding in every day or for all-important show days. Leather reinforcements at the fingers and thumb ensure excellent rein grip – whatever the weather. The four way stretch fabric provides a perfect fit, allows for flexibility and a close, bulk-free rein contact. Designed for style and comfort and featuring a fashionable, subtle leather detail on the reverse. Black, Brown, Cream and Navy. Sizes: Adult & Childs. RRP: from £14.00 www.carrotsuk.com

Our tester, Judith Buckley, says: These gloves are completely right for the fashion conscious lady. They are good to look at, trimmed with leather, and ideal for lightweight use or summer competition. Mine are black, but they are available in cream/ white for dressage. The downside is that as a budget end of the market, some of the ‘bits’ I would expect are missing. There is no adjustment of security round the wrist, so the gloves can begin to slide down the hand. Also, there are no reinforced bits on the fingers, so if your horse likes to take hold they will soon wear or you will lose grip. Perhaps not for the professional but a very acceptable pair of gloves.

Horseware –

Lightweight, breathable and stretchy, this will become your ‘go to’ shirt for both schooling and competition. Long sleeves, turtleneck style collar with a gorgeous yet simple logo, elastic band at the bottom for a snug yet flattering look. Perfect as your show shirt, put your stock tie over for the ring or foxhunting, or under your cross country vest for a polished look out on the course. Great under a gilet or jacket to keep you cosy without bulk when you are out schooling. Easy to care for, just pop in the washing machine after a weekend competition, or a long week of riding. White. Sizes: Ladies XS-XL. RRP: £33.95 www.horseware.com

Our tester, Emma Woolley, says: The material is extremely comfortable and breathable and I’ve really enjoyed competing in it. It has a polo neck top which fits perfectly under the stock, and all down the arms features a vent making it very breathable. Around the cuffs and bottom of the shirt on the inside is a slight rubbery material which stops the sleeves and bottom of the shirt from riding up. I really like the design, no buttons made it very easy and quick to change into. Perfect for competitors at all levels.
