We all care about not just the health, but also the wellbeing of our horses and ponies and we research a lot of articles on that topic, but after some recent experiences, I’m left wondering just how many people ‘say one thing and do another’? Take the ambitious Pony Club mother at a recent show jumping competition who cheerfully admitted that the saddle their two ponies shared didn’t fit one of them, but they just “shoved another pad under it”. As a British Dressage Listed judge I will see four or five saddles in every class of 20-25 competitors that clearly don’t fit the horse, but the riders seem oblivious to the fact. Dressage requires the purest form of the horse’s paces to be presented and a horse will usually make discomfort pretty obvious to us judges when we watch him move - a saddle needs to fit just like our shoes do or marks will be compromised. Then there’s bitting; I was told recently that a lady starting a lovely young pony was using a bit way too big as “it’s the smallest one I’ve got” - no excuse at all for that, but you just have to look at the plethora of bits these days to wonder what happened to the basics of training a horse to carry a rider in balance, with confidence and trust? With the main competition season about to start, training and fitness will both be put to the test and even though we can’t see it, how you’re thinking and feeling as a rider can make all the difference to success - don’t miss the interesting article starting on page 20.

Spring also means more turnout and our Pristine Paddocks series continues with advice on fertiliser and early season weed control. There’s also a reminder to check for poisonous weeds, some of which can be fatal, so do check you can identify the most common of the dangerous weeds. Finally, if you’re out and about with your horse or pony, do share your results with us - and good luck!
