RECOMMENDED HIGHLY

Uvex Helmets – Perfexxion Active

The company says: Fitting is easier due to the unique IAS 3D size adjustment system. The fast adjusting strap (FAS) is easily and continuously adapted to the rider’s head ensuring the helmet stays firmly on the head and the chin strap is always in the optimal position. A higher ventilation performance is provided by the air channelling system running through the insert of the helmet and the shell. This technology performs like a high tech personal temperature controlled air conditioning system, ensuring the head remains cool. The removable, machine washable high tech lining is a hygienic, anti-bacterial, anti-allergy, moisture wicking material interwoven with silver fibres, which prevent bacterial growth and odours. Black, Blue, Brown & Anthracite. Sizes: SSX-XL. RRP: £179.95 www.zebraproducts.co.uk

The company says: The gloves - lined with Welltex® fabric

infused with ceramic particles, cause long wave infra-red heat to radiate back towards the body increasing circulation and can potentially relieve joint tension, maximise performance and help avoid injury. Beautifully made with superb grip and a robust yet sleek outer to ensure they are not bulky. A soft Velcro wrist closure. RRP: £55.00. The socks – also made from Welltex®

fabric provide the wearer

with a warming sensation and are very popular amongst people who suffer from circulatory problems and those with diabetes. Black. RRP: £25.00 www.backontrack.com/uk

Our tester, Maria Phillips, says: Outer of gloves has a feel of a faux suede, so a great grip on the reins whether leather or rubber. Worn virtually every day while training and at competitions and they still look like new after several weeks of use with no signs of wear of fraying. Waterproof and very warm even in the coldest, this was very beneficial to me as having had operations for carpal tunnel syndrome it is essential that I keep a good flow of circulation to my hands and these gloves did just that. Rinsed in warm soapy water, I left them to dry naturally. Go for a size larger as they came up slightly small. The socks had a very silky, luxurious feel and being lightweight and extremely warm, are ideal for winter or summer. Used regularly, they kept my feet beautifully warm. Washed on a cool wash, they came up like new with no stretch or shrinkage. Sizes were true.

Our tester, Simon Buckley, says: Well this has had a mixed review - a very appealing box and with a dust bag, but I was a little disappointed about the hat’s initial appearance. The peak looked a bit small and it looked a little like a cycling helmet. However, on with the test. Very lightweight and seemed to have good ventilation, so ideal in warmer conditions. Very comfortable and easy to wear, while the unique size adjustment mechanism on the back is superb and makes it very secure. Nevertheless, personally I wasn’t impressed with shape of the back which seemed to leave the lower part of my head exposed. Despite the negativity, it has worn very well, in fact I can honestly say I almost forget I have it on. Even with this, people need to buy it before they would wear it and I feel in today’s competitive market of riding hats this wouldn’t stand out on a shelf against other hats on sale.

Taurus Footwear – Leather Gaiters

RECOMMENDED

The company says: Manufactured from soft, calf Aniline Leather, a soft Amara lining and with an elasticated rear panel to ensure optimum flexibility and a streamlined fit, hardwearing YKK rear zip and elasticated stirrup, these are a comfortable and robust alternative to long boots. Brown. Adult XXS – XXL (children’s sizes arriving in the New Year). RRP: £42.25 www.taurusfootwear.co.uk

Our tester, Pippa Hahn, says: I only had these gaiters for a few weeks, but I have ridded in them regularly. Although a little difficult for me to get on initially, as I am old and stiff and the gaiters do up from the back of the knee down, after that that they fastened easily. They moulded well to the leg and my friend commented on how slim they made my leg look, no mean feat! Comfortable to ride in and allowing flexibility to the leg. I’m interested to see how they will stand up to a heavy work load, but I will definitely keep them for use at training sessions as they look really smart. A definite alternative to long boots for competition.
