CORRIE & SANNOX Solitude Photo: Marguertie Richards

lage abandoned in 1829 dur- ing the Highland clearances. A barites mine, opened in 1840, was a source of em- ployment in the area for 20 years.

Operations ended in 1862 when the 11th Duke of Ham- ilton closed the mine, claim- ing that it spoiled the local area. Today the glen is distinctly unspoiled. For hikers, the walk up to the head of Glen Sannox along the banks of the Sannox Burn allows for spectacular views across the deep notch of the Witch’s Step leading to the summit of Caisteil Abhail. A walk up the glen will reveal the Devil’s Punchbowl (Coire na

Ciche), an impressive

corrie and an enjoyable walk for the less adventurous.
