CATACOL

Catacol

Catacol Catacol Bay

he row of 12 white- washed cottages in Catacol is one of Arran’s most iconic images. Nicknamed the Twelve Apos- tles, they were built to house those who were moved from the surrounding glens during the clearances. According to the census of 1841, 85 people had lived at

T

Old Catacol (situated higher up the hillside) but 10 years later it shows a number of new buildings on the shoreline called Arrandale. This is most defi nitely the row. At the southern end of the bay there is a well-trodden path that takes you along the banks of the river in Glen Catacol. Not only does the river have

some fantastically deep pools, perfect for swimming on a summer’s day, but there are large fl at rocks ideal for sun- bathing. If you’re feeling more adven- turous follow the path from the bridge up through the glen to the isolated waters of Loch Tanna or the distinctive rump of Meall nan Damh.
