BEACHES
Arran has some beautiful beaches Photo: Hugh Boag
W ith its predominant-
ly rocky coastline Arran’s few sandy
beaches are popular with vis- itors.
Cladach beach at the end of Brodick Bay has some lovely white sand stretching along the shore towards Goatfell and is often packed with tour- ists on a warm sunny day en- joying the sheltered bay and entertainments close by. The longest sandy beach on Arran is at Blackwaterfoot. Stretching languidly along the western coast the beach is popular with dog walkers making their way to the Kings Caves.
A little further up the coast is the enchantingly small sandy beach at Dougarie, with its whitewashed changing-hut next to the grand boathouse. This beach was a favour- ite of the Dukes of Hamilton
when they stayed at Dougarie House in the summer. On the southern shore, the Silver Sands at Kildonan are reached either by descending the steep cliff path or by walk- ing along the rocky shore and the soft white sandy coves are popular with young families. Down the southend you will also find Scotland’s only designated nudist beach at Cleats Shore, not far from Kil- mory. It’s easy to see why the beach has been designated for use by naturists as it is situated quite a walk from the main road. It is a beautifully seclud- ed beach for the more adven- turous visitors. The beach at Sannox is the northern half of the island’s only real sandy shore. On a hot summer day the beach is ideal for swimming, and a great place for a barbeque.
