among them is the attractive little fi shing port of Blackwater- foot which is nestled around a pretty bay with a tiny harbour. the golf course, it draws peo- ple from all over the island whatever the weather or time of year. The sunsets can be spectacular. There are several hotels and pubs in the village as well as shops, a post offi ce and a fuel station. A mile up the hill is the vil- lage of Shiskine, Arran’s only

non-coastal village. It used to be one of the liveliest villag- es in Arran, with a church, a school, two shops, a smiddy, a police station, and public house. Although many of these are no longer open it is still a won- derful village to visit. Just outside Shiskine the Balmichael visitor centre is great for a day out, offering a little bit of everything. The Shiskine Valley is also the site of some of Arran’s most spectacular views and is well worth exploring.
