All the latest industry news from Europe Feed giant reports global growth
Norway seafood could be bigger than oil, says PM
THE Norwegian Prime Minister has said the country’s fishing and aquaculture sectors have the potential to become the country’s main industry when oil starts to run out. Speaking to the annual meeting of Fiskebat
last month, Erna Solberg said both conventional fishing and aquaculture could grow five-fold over the next 35 years. ‘We have come to a turning point where the oil will no longer be the engine behind our eco- nomic growth – and I emphasise growth. Oil will still be a big part of the Norwegian economy for many decades, but we cannot expect the same repercussions from the industry that we have had in the last 10 years. ‘
NORWAY based feed giant Ewos experi- enced an overall sales growth of about six per cent in volume and seven per cent in revenue in 2014, with strong growth throughout the year in Scotland, Canada and Vietnam, while sales grew in Chile in the second half of 2014. In Norway, the com- pany recovered from the challenges in Q3 to deliver growth and stable operations in Q4. The company report- ed a steady increase in sales of the new, in- novative grower feed RAPID, and continued good penetration of health feeds. However, in part due to the entry of Marine Harvest, 2015 market volume growth is
expected to be only one per cent. In Scotland the market growth was four per cent, while in 2015 market volume is expected to grow two per cent.
In Canada the market grew 15 per cent, due to improved biological conditions and strong smolt inputs in Western Canada; in Vietnam, market volume was up by approximately 10 per cent.
The Chilean market grew by seven per cent and Ewos
remained the market leader. It has invested $9.5 million in a new research centre in the country, construc- tion of which began towards the end of February. ‘Food is important

for health – this is the case for fish as well,’ said EWOS CEO Einar Wathne. ‘Feed is a key part of the solution to improving fish health. ‘Through research and innovation, we will offer our custom- ers the best health feed products that can possibly be made.’ The EWOS Fish Health Centre, which will be located in the Los Lagos region, would ‘benefit both
our company and the aquaculture industry in general’, said Wathne. Adel El-Mowafi, research director at EWOS Innovation, expects that the unit in Chile will increase research capacity significantly. ‘We will be able to do four to five times more studies each year and speed up our investi- gation into how feed can reduce the harmful effects of sea lice.
