he challenge of taking over as editor of Fish Farmer as it establishes itself as a monthly magazine could have been daunting, but I have been eased into the job with the help of several people. The first is my

predecessor here, Tim Siddons, who has shared his knowledge and been on hand to ensure the March edition got to the printers on time! Also making the path much smoother have been those with long expe-

rience in aquaculture, from the academics to the early pioneers, some of whom have written for this issue. In no particular order, they include Martyn Haines, who has future

generations of fish farmers in mind when, in our special training feature, he addresses the skills gap. Heather Jones, of the Scottish Aquaculture Innovation Centre, also considers education in the sector with the an- nouncement of funding for 25 masters degrees. And Dr Anuschka Miller, at the Scottish Association for Marine Science, spells out the international opportunities for young scientists in an MSc programme that takes in Crete, France and Scotland’s beautiful west coast. Further insights are provided by Dr Malcolm Dixon, who writes about

the development of aquaculture in Egypt as part of our focus on the Middle East, a region undergoing massive investment in everything from Nile tilapia to its first salmon farm. I was lucky to be introduced to the aquaculture industry at a young age

by my father, Peter Hjul, who became one of the most outspoken cheer- leaders for the potential of fish farming. Over the next few months, I hope to see for myself how this potential

has been realised. And I hope, too, that you will come to me with your ideas – and advice – to make Fish Farmer serve the industry as well as it has done since 1977.
