Valka wins Icefi sh award


VALKA, which will be in the Seafood Processing Global, was awarded Out- standing Icelandic Supplier Processing 2014 in the small companies cate- gory by the Icefi sh (Icelandic fi sheries exhibition) award committee. The awards reward excellence among suppliers of fi sh pro- cessing equipment whose growth and success is noticeable in the industry. Two years ago, Val- ka installed its fi rst X-ray guided cutting machine for detect- ing and automatically removing pin bones in fi sh fi llets, as well as cutting them to the desired portions. It is a system ap- plauded for bringing great progress to the


processing of white fi sh, and has now been installed in a number of processing plants, in Iceland and Norway. Once integrated


with Valka’s new pre-trimming line and Aligner packing grader, it makes a complete advanced processing line. ‘We´re proud to be


recognised by people who work in the industry, and pleased that our endeavours are acknowledged,’ said Helgi Hjalmars- son, CEO of Valka. ‘Our main goal is to


make products that will enhance custom- ers’ productivity.’


Marel machinery in demand


MAREL, the Icelandic seafood processing sup- plier, makes complete processing lines for white fi sh and salmon, prawns and mussels. Among its biggest customers is Morrisons, which has invested in Marel technology at its Grimsby in-house processing facility. The plant portions, fi llets, and packs a range of seafood including salmon, haddock, cod, smoked had- dock, smoked cod, cold water prawns, mussels, and surimi.


With customers demanding less whole sides and more portioned seafood products, it is more important than ever to achieve the best trimming results. In particular, optimising yield and raising throughput per man-hour are key factors in successful fi sh processing. Rob Smith, head of operations at the Grimsby facility, said the Marel trimming line in particular has given them a great return. ‘What the Marel trimming station and fi lleting station has allowed us to do is double the ca- pacity and further improve our yield on white fi sh by about three per cent,’ he said. Marel can help processors of all sizes opti- mise their yields and meet the growing interna- tional demand for high-value seafood products. In Brussels, the company will be show- ing its MS2730 fi lleting machine with two ground-breaking and unique new features: integrated back and belly trimming that im-


proves yield and reduces the need for manual trimming.


Also on display will be the I-Slice 330 retail pack slicer that, with high accuracy, slices salm- on into batches of fi xed weight or fi xed num- ber of slices and then automatically delivers the batches either on boards, trays or directly on to the conveyor belt for feeding into vacuum packs without using boards. It’s the fi rst line of its kind and makes the packing process more environmentally friendly. And Brussels will see the pre-release of the


new Marel skinner, the dual lane MS1710 skin- ner, which is the fi rst skinner on the market to run with head fi rst, which means less handling of the fi llets in the process while saving labour.


We have to admit. We didn’t see this one coming.
