Birthday boy Josh swaps presents for charity fund

A SELFLESS youngster from Kings Hill has ripped up his birth- day present list – and sent all the money to charity instead. Josh Houry, from Queen Street, decided a children’s charity could better benefit from the funds that would have been spent on him – and asked his friends and relatives to give the money to the Rainbow Trust. The trust, which helps children

with life-threatening illnesses as well as offering support to their families, is now £418 better off as a result of Josh’s generous gesture – while Josh himself is feeling blessed from “the gift of giving”. Joshwas 12 soon after Christmas,

but instead of opening up another pile of presents, he set about or- ganising a Virgin Money Giving page. His father Chris got the ball rolling with a £100 donation and his grandfather waded in with a further £50 – the sort of sum he would have spent on a present. Mum Samantha Holland said: “Like all children, Josh generally

thinking about the presents they are going to receive, thiswas an un- usual and quite delightful act. It was heartwarming to hear how Josh decided children less fortunate than himself could benefit from his birthday andwe are all very proud of him.” Mrs Holland said: “When people started asking him what hewanted for his birthday, Josh said he didn’t want anything and suggested they gave money to charity instead. “He’s always been a very gener-

Sutton Valence School headmas-

ter Bruce Grindlay said: “At a time of year when many children are

ous boy and gives his unwanted toys to charity shops – but thiswas quite extraordinary! It was all his own idea, butwe helped him set up the ‘giving’ page so that our rela- tives and friends could donate.” A spokesman for the Rainbow

Trust said:“We’d like to thank Josh for his incredible generosity and the impressive amount he has raised for Rainbow Trust. We rely almost entirely on voluntary dona- tions and thanks to supporters like Josh, we are able to help families caring for a seriously ill child across England.”
