Boxers benefit from fund
SNODLAND Amateur Boxing Club have received a £400 dona- tion from Kent Police to buy equipment. Chairman Dave Phillips told
Town Talk that Anne Moloney, the chairman of Snodland Town Council, had applied to the police for the money on behalf of the club. The club have 100 mem- bers and about 40 attend the training sessions at the commu- nity centre every Tuesday. The money will be spent on shorts, vests, gloves, skipping ropes and other equipment. PCSOs Kim Bashford and Ross McMillan, who are both
based in Snodland, are pictured handing the cheque to Dave, watched by Anne Moloney and boxers. Kim explained: "Money within
the police property fund is raised from the sale of seized, lost and stolen property that cannot be re- turned to its owners. It has long been the tradition that small awards are granted from this fund to deserving local causes, which strengthen our communities. "An application was submitted
for the boxing club to receive money from the fund and as a re- sult Kent Police donated £400 to the club."
with a real taste of what the news industry is like. Year 10 student Alice said: "Itwas
fun and interactive. It was espe- cially good that we got to hear the information from somebody who actually does this for a living and has a real understanding of the pressures of TV news." Teacher Emma Hawkes said: "I
amreally pleased with the progress our students are making in media studies. “This was an excellent workshop
which will give our students an even deeper understanding."
John Young with Gabrielle Sutton, Mitchel Sutton and Reece Anscomb Champion Alan cleans up the town
SNODLAND Town Council mem- ber, Alan Keeley, has been recog- nised as an Environmental Champion by Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council for tak- ing the lead in introducing the Snodland Litter Code for busi- nesses. And Snodland Goes Cleaner, of
which he is chairman, is also an Environmental Champion, for keeping the town clean since 2008. Five residents and five groups
from within the borough have been recognised for "going the extra mile" to improve the local environment. Mayor Sasha Luck said: "I am very grateful to our Environmen-
tal Champions for taking time to help keep this beautiful borough clean and tidy and a big thank you too to Ve- olia Environ- mental Service for supporting the awards again this year." She con- gratulated the winners and hoped their
efforts would inspire others to be- come Environmental Champions in years to come. Town Talk reported in April
on every shopkeeper urging them to keep clear the areas out- side their shops. He said the scheme had run
very well and 41 traders had signed up for the scheme. "I felt dubious when I started, "
he said. "I thought it would work but not as well as it has. The town is tidy, there is very little litter around and people have started using the bins. "It proves the system works.
People realise this is their town and why shouldn't we keep it tidy? If it can work here it can work anywhere and proves the town is proud of itself." He thanked the town council
2014 that Alan was going to call and the staff for their help. Plan to repair
river wharfage LAFARGE Tarmac has applied to Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council for planning permission to repair a section of failed wharfage at Holborough, Snodland. A spokesman for the company explained: "There are no opera- tional aspects behind the need for this work, the intention is merely to reinstate a length of river wall, constructed in about the mid 1920s, which has failed over time to provide a safe and sustainable river bank.” He explained that although
there had never been any inten- tion to reuse this section of the wharf it still performed an impor- tant task in protecting the west bank of the river. This also pro- tects the important wildlife habitat at Holborough Marshes, which is managed by the Kent Wildlife Trust, which supports the pro- posal. The spokesman added: "This is
part of Lafarge Tarmac's ongoing programme to improve and en- hance their properties and land- holdings in accordance with principles of good husbandry."
