Damage prompts car ban at town cemetery
VISITORS will be banned from driving their vehicles into Snod- land Cemetery from March 2. They have previously been
asked to leave their vehicles out- side, but there have been growing concerns about the number of people driving into the area caus- ing damage to the grass and paths and, more recently, to graves and kerbstones, causing distress to the relatives of the de- ceased. Karen Sowten, chief executive
officer of Snodland Town Council, said: “The town cemetery holds a very important role in the commu- nity and it is essential that all ef- forts are made to create a peaceful, harmonious and sym- pathetic environment. "The unwelcome increase in
cars using the pathway around the cemetery creates a loss of dig-
situation is not acceptable.” A car park has been developed
next to the cemetery with pedes- trian access into the cemetery. It will be open from October 1 to March 31 between 8am and 4pm and from April 1 to September 30 between 8am and 9pm. Disabled access has been

nity and serenity which the town council regrets. "The council is also aware that
there have been occasions when visitors at the cemetery have been unaware that they are actually in- truding on a funeral service when driving beside a grave with mourners attending. Clearly this
made available to an area at the back of the chapel and vehicles will not be permitted to drive on the perimeter road. Access is by Radar key only, allowing disabled people to unlock the double gates for car access. The council is looking into pro-
viding small trolleys for visitors who need to carry heavy items. Karen added: "By putting the
above restrictions in place, the town council will be re-establish- ing a peaceful environment from which all visitors will benefit."
