downsmail.co.uk Work onwater main delayed

PROGRESS in the town centre to upgrade an old water main has been slower than expected. South East Water, which began digging upWeek Street on January 5, admits the discovery of large, underground concrete blocks and old utility services has caused de- lays. In the first twoweeks of the proj-

ect, Chris Love, the authority’s de- livery manager, said just 50 metres of pipe had been installed.

He added: “Despite having checked historic utility records for the area and digging exploratory holes, we can never be 100% sure of what awaits us. In shopping areas such as this we do expect some surprises and plan for that, but on this occasion the surprises are causing us a few more early problems than anticipated.” He said there was some concern

that work in Earl Street – the sec- ond phase of the project – might

Pat Lamb drowning verdict

A 28-YEAR-OLD man whose body was recovered from the River Med- way four weeks after he went miss- ing from Maidstone town centre had drowned, an inquest heard. Friends and family of Patrick Lamb, from Greenhithe, organised appeals and searches after he was last seen in the early hours of the morning after leaving Bar Chocolate. Police were alerted to his disap- pearance the next morning when he failed to turn up at his hotel. Mr Lamb was found in the water at

Cuxton marina almost a month after disappearing. An inquest at Maid- stone heard that Mr Lamb appeared intoxicated on CCTV footage. A post mortem examination showed he died from immersion. Police said the death was not being treated as suspicious and the hearing was adjourned until April 1. Mr Lamb’s family and girlfriend Natasha Morgan described him as “an extremely kind and selfless per- son” and “an amazing son, brother and uncle”.

Street and Earl Street would be kept informed of progress on the £155,000 project to replace 400m of pipe, which was scheduled for completion on April 3. Meanwhile, South East Water’s contractorswere progressing work

to fit a new main to 83 properties in Stockbury, along the busy A249 between Hayes Lane and Steps Hill Road. Drivers faced lane closures and

speed restrictions while the £240,000 project was completed. The closure of Steps Hill Road

for a week from February 16 will be the final phase of the work, which had to be abandoned in Jan- uary and again in September last year after causing traffic chaos.
