Keeping the PM7 rolling at Perlen Papier

O

ne of the world’s most modern newsprint machines is providing reliable service thanks

to a range of products supplied by Henkel Loctite. The 130m-long PM7 machine

was installed by Voith at Perlen Papier AG in Switzerland in 2010, since when it has been converting recycled paper and primary fibres at a speed of 1,900 metres per minute, giving a yearly newsprint output of 360,000 tonnes. Although the machine mostly runs around the clock, 365 days a year, just a few hours each month are allocated for maintenance. Its inner workings comprise many hundreds of rollers, cylinders, pumps, drives, pipes and valves and Loctite products are used for

cleaning, bonding, sealing and lubricating these components. Moist cellulose is sprayed

onto rollers as part of the paper production process. It is essential that this, as well as surplus hydraulic oil, is effectively removed so the Loctite anaerobic adhesives can achieve the best possible bond and seal. For this purpose the maintenance team uses Loctite SF 7063 to ensure there are no contaminants to impede the efficiency of the processes. Vibration is a by-product of the machine’s operation, so is important to ensure that threaded assemblies do not shake loose. A Henkel mainstay for this application is Loctite 243. This medium- strength product is proven to tolerate slight contamination of

industrial oil and is formulated to allow part disassembly with hand tools for servicing. For sealing of flanges – the cover of a large vacuum blower, for example – Loctite SI 5980 is said to be the product of choice as it fills all surface irregularities and gaps to achieve the best possible bond. This black, alkoxy silicone was chosen by the maintenance team for its good oil resistance. Given the hot and damp

environment, it is also essential that assemblies are protected against corrosion and fretting which is why Loctite LB 8150 Anti-Seize is extensively used. This product contains aluminium, graphite and extreme pressure additives to provide lubrication at high temperatures and

operating speeds. Paper is an extremely sensitive and diverse product and the work of a paper maker like Perlen Papier AG is more of an art than a process. It is therefore particularly important that all parts of the machine are working to optimum levels to achieve the fine-balance between productivity and performance. The efficiency of the Loctite maintenance products are essential to the mix and also to ensuring PM7 remains reliable over its anticipated 40-year life span. Inking system saves costs and improves print

A newly-developed flexo ink- metering system that replaces a conventional wiper roll, single blade system, or a chambered blade system, has been launched by Sun Automation. The AccuPrint Chambered Doctor Blade System is available for almost every type of finishing machine, in widths from 60in (150 cm) to 220in (560 cm). The system is equipped with

features such as tool-less blade changes, quick-change tool-less end seals, ink flow detector, anilox roll drive system, ink surge suppressor, ink filter, soap dispenser, electronically paced ink pump, continuous air bladder loading and a structurally sound support beam.

The ink system is completely

enclosed, preventing dust or other debris from entering the system. A totally enclosed chambered system makes it easier for machine operators to keep the ink chemistry healthy. Ink does not circulate through an open pan;

instead, ink flow is sealed from the environment. The AccuPrint chambered doctor blade system is engineered to be compatible with many machine manufacturers and models. This product is available as a field upgrade or as optional equipment

on a newly built machine (OEM). AccuPrint has an Eco-Wash

recirculating feature that requires less water during wash-up, offering a significant reduction in ink loss at wash-up (that does not get into the wash water) – only 0.56 litres lost compared to 3.9 litres for a typical two-roll system. A total clean is achieved in just five minutes, a quarter of the time for a regular wash-up. Again, savings are made directly as well as increased efficiencies which Provides further cost savings.
