with consistency in the forming or press section. Continuous monitoring allows the operator to make continuous adjustments in real time and when looking at the forming section this can greatly improve not only quality but also reduce energy consumption. Development continues with diagnostics. “This is constantly on our minds,” said Giovanni Cristini. “The latest product to be unveiled is Easy Scan, a plug and play safe scan system.” Performing measurements on an operating high-speed paper machine always presents risk, and exposes the technicians to significant danger. Safety regulations are banning the access of operators to operating paper machines to perform manual scans of the machine clothing. EasyScan is a transverse beam engineered to work with Cristini’s portable felt moisture and permeability meter (said to be unique in the industry) PermFlowDUO, which eliminates the needs for manual scans and therefore the risk involved. Based on a self-supporting,

guides and completely protects the transportation systems for the PermFlowDUO portable meter. A single meter can be installed on a number of EasyScan systems, reducing considerably the investment cost. The meter locks easily to the EasyScan with the SmartOn mounting system. All the meter movements are controlled by servo motors and proximity sensors. The pressure on the felt surface while measuring trough the paper trim is controlled pneumatically.

Value measured Systematic monitoring of the press fabric’s permeability and moisture is essential to ensure optimum performance, as well as to troubleshoot problems during normal operation or close to the end of the operating life. Optimised press section and

press clothing means higher production speed, lower energy consumption in both press and dryer section and improved run ability with better paper quality and efficiency. Additionally, the optimum performance of the press fabrics can be extended

by cleaning at the right time to avoid clogging build-up. Well maintained press fabrics each year saves hundreds of thousands of euros by replacing the manual work of the service engineers by a semi-automatic mechanical system, safely easing the indispensable fabric scan process.

Easy and safe to operate The unit is controlled by a programmable microprocessor. After locking the PermFlowDUO to the EasyScan system, the operator stays safely outside the felt run, controlling the scan process. The measurement process, such as transporting the meter inside the paper trim, pressing it to the felt surface, starting scan and returning in place, is fully automatic. All the system operations are controlled by a hand-held waterproof touchscreen.

Designed for all positions Engineered for fabrics up to 11.5 m wide, the EasyScan design is extremely compact. Designed for the absence of transversal walkaway, the system can be placed in many more machine positions that would be otherwise impossible to reach with the traditional manual scanners.

Powerful package EasyScan is designed to work best with PermFlowDUO, which is equipped with powerful on board software to simultaneously plot fabric permeability and moisture in form of graphs and 3D mapping, to show clearly the variations of these components on the whole felt surface. Additionally, a function detects automatically not only the felt clogging, but also the wear bands. Fast Fournier Transformation analysis enables easy and immediate prediction of vibration problems related to rolls and fabric barring. In conclusion, Giovanni Cristini summarised the benefits of EasyScan thus: “It will easily measure the press fabrics moisture and permeability, increase the amount of measuring points in the press section, provide optimization of the vacuum in the suction boxes and reduce excess vacuum use, achieve important energy savings trough vacuum and press section setup optimisation, and enable the optimisation of the fabric CD moisture and permeability profiles.” More information from Giuseppe
