A major step towards
responsible packaging
Orora’s B9 line is the largest papermaking machine in
Australia with capacity of 400,000 tonnes a year
producti on manager Tero Ylikoski. B9 was a step up in size terms
for the Australian papermaking industry. It was also a big step forward for Orora in energy effi ciency, water use and the environment. As Orora’s managing director Nigel Garrard noted during the B9 opening ceremony, scrapping three ageing machines in favour of a single modern paper
machine has slashed energy use by 34 per cent, cut water consumpti on by 26 per cent and reduced waste sent to landfi ll by 75 per cent.
Single supplier advantage While machinery for most projects on this scale is supplied by several vendors, B9 was ordered solely from Valmet (known as
Metso Paper at that ti me). Jacob Chreti en, general manager of Technical - Paper & Recycling at Orora, explained that Valmet was chosen to supply the complete line because it “had delivered a number of enti re producti on lines which were similar to what we needed to meet the market requirements in Australia”. More specifi cally, these lines included
“a twin gap former, twin shoe press, a high-output winder and an integrated machine control system, process control system and quality control system”. Apart from an Opti Concept
boardmaking line, the delivery included pulpers, electrifi cati on, and a Metso DNA automati on package. This single supplier approach has paid off for
