“LOVE AND MARRIAGE, LOVE AND MARRIAGE, GO TOGETHER LIKE A HORSE AND CARRIAGE…”
I’ve never really gotten the comparison in that lyric. The image that comes to mind is of the horse
strapped to a carriage, dutifully dragging it along with all the implied burdens of its owner’s contents. In snow, rain and sleet, the horse keeps on going, slogging his or her way through what ever comes. On further examination, maybe that isn’t such a bad concept to ponder, after all. Success in any
relationship is difficult and sometimes, that’s all you are able to do… just slog through it and hope for a happier day. The sun always comes out eventually, now doesn’t it? Valentine’s is one of those moments when you have a choice between hearts, flowers and all of
the sweet, sappy things that go along with the holiday, or the grumpy cynicism that many (code for myself) choose. Though the season is so very commercialized and I think that if I see one more piece of heart-shaped anything, I might scream, the sentiment of love is not lost on me. Maybe it’s time to re-frame the concept? To that end, I had a couple of really wonderful perspec-
tives dropped in my lap by two of the stories between this month’s pages. Dr. Chris Donaghue wrote about how we as LGBT people have the opportunity to toss out the rule book when it comes to love and marriage. Let’s not forget, that “living outside the lines” is an LGBT tradition in many ways and is a big part of what defines us. That isn’t to say that we can’t enjoy the fruits of our labors, such as marriage becoming legal in 36 states (and counting). But, it was our unique perspective that allowed us to operate outside of the bounds of society’s rules. In doing so, we created a whole new reality for ourselves, both relationally and sexually. I’m not so sure I’m ready to give that freedom up, to conventional norms, nor do I think we have to. Molly Ringwald was a fascinating interview and her take on relationships left me with a happy
image, when she said that she and her husband Panio Gianopoulos’s recipe for a successful relation- ship, is all about cookies... and sharing. She put it this way; “Always try to look any situation like a plate of chocolate cookies. You both really like chocolate cookies, but you know that your partner really loves them—even more than you do. It’s the idea that you just let them have that cookie…” Sweet words to live by. Go out and bake some love this February... and share those cookies!
