Bayard Rustin Civil Rights Honors Bayard Rustin was an American social move-

ment leader for civil rights, socialism, pacifism and gay rights. His belief in nonviolent resistance earned him a leadership role alongside Martin Luther King, Jr. during the earliest days of the anti-segregation movement. His arrest in 1953 for “homosexual activity,” then illegal in many states, paradoxically forced Rustin to take a back seat in the fight for inclusion. In spite of this, his fight for equality continued, as does his legacy today. Rustin became one of the leading voices for the LGBT community in the 1970s—and most recently received a posthumus Presidential Medal of Free- dom from President Obama in 2013. Each year, the San Diego LGBT Center honors individuals, who, in his tradition, reflect that continuing passion for equality. The Bayard Rustin Civil Rights Honors recipients for 2015 include Assemblywoman Dr. Shirley Weber, Stan Lewis and Phyllis Jackson for the Lifetime Achievement Award. LaRue Fields, Christopher Wilson, Tanisha Conwright and John Gwynn are this year’s Civil Rights Honorees. Join your fellow San Diegans on Friday, February 27 at The LGBT Center for the Bayard Rustin Civil Rights Honors. For more information, go to facebook.com/ events/1541379689451169.
