SAN DIEGO THEATRE BRIEFS:
THE GRIFT The setting is North Park’s historic Lafayette
Hotel and the gang at the La Jolla Playhouse has “gone over the wall.” Once again, dabbling in a little criminal activity and you the audience are the accomplices… a part of an elaborate con. La Jolla Playhouse describes the Without Walls (WoW) experience as “The Grift is a participa- tory journey through the expansive rooms and spaces of the 1940s-era landmark, where audiences are introduced to Ben, who under mysterious circumstances, lived his entire life at the hotel. Having found an unlikely mentor in a traveling con-man, a frequent guest at the hotel, Ben’s last wish is to enlist the audience’s help to execute one final, giant swindle.” The Grift at the Lafayette Hotel runs through Sun- day, March 22.
LOVE, LOSS, AND WHAT I WORE The Ephron sisters, Nora and Delia, are two very
talented siblings. The pair have given us such films as Silkwood, When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Julia and Julia and Bewitched, along with a host of other books, plays and stories. Based on the best-seller, Love, Loss, and What I Wore by Ilene Beckerman, as well as the recollections of the Ephrons’ friends, needless to say, this play offers a vast number of great stories. It is described as follows, “The show uses clothing and accessories and the memories they trigger to tell funny and often poignant stories that all women can relate to, creating one of the most enduring theater going experiences domestically and overseas.” Love, Loss, and What I Wore takes place at The Lyceum Theatre from Wednesday, February 25 through Sunday, March 22. identity, this play tells the story of Helen and John Dingleberry, parents of baby Daisy, so named because they are too polite to physically investigate, that “it” is assumed a girl. This assumption leads to all manner of misperceptions, fueling emotional and personality problems when “it” [Daisy] is actually a boy. Author Christopher Durang, who The New York Times called, “one of the funniest dramatists alive, and one of the most sharply satiric,” creates a story that is deeply funny, yet painfully poignant. Telling a boy’s coming of age tale, his search for identity and his determination as an adult, not to repeat his life’s calamitous mistakes with his own infant. Baby with the Bathwater runs from Thursday, February 26 through Sunday, March 29 at the Diversionary Theatre.
