Escape into a world of hedonism,

activism and Hollywood stars So that was Christmas, and what did you learn?

For many, the key lesson was over-indulgence: too much food that was eaten, too much food that was not eaten, too many presents that were quickly discarded and too many presents that were over-used (we’re talking about you, computer games, you anti-social things!).

Now we are in the New Year the emphasis is on eating less, exercising more and trying to shake off the effects of the festive hangover.

If any of the above resonates, here is a less obvious tip: read the interview with artist

Ralph Steadman on pages six and seven and escape into a glamorous hedonistic world of sketching at some of sport’s grandest occasions, high profile political activism and drunkenly rubbing shoulders with Hollywood stars. Indeed, a certain Johnny Depp has visited Steadman’s home in Loose, Maidstone on several occasions, including as recently as 2012.

If this can’t take you away from the early-year grind, we have plenty of other ideas. The Canterbury Tales (page 22) offers a wondrous insight into medieval misadventures courtesy of the great poet, Geoffrey Chaucer; you can go back to nature in the great outdoors (page 23); or warm yourself up with a spicy dish (page 24 and 25).

We have all this, and much more. Enjoy. Editor
