Town Profile  Canvas village to grow

Ashford Designer Outlet’s iconic canvas canopy is a ‘mecca’ for shoppers from across Kent, and the Continent. Its success in attracting ‘shopping

tourists’, is behind a plan to add another 30 shops and restaurants (opening late 2016) and a proposed third phase, which would double its size and make it one of the largest designer outlets in the UK. Its 80-plus stores already include

designer shops Superdry and Ted Baker, offering customers savings of up to 60% year round, and its restaurants include Pizza Express and Wagamama. Open 10am-8pm Monday to Friday, 9am-8pm Saturday and 10am-6pm Sunday.

Splash the cash The Dockside Outlet Centre at Chatham is home to more than 50 retailers, including Clarks, Pilot, M&S Outlet, Moss Bros, and Claire’s Accessories, offering discounts of about 30% on high street prices. The discount Cadbury Shop offers a useful distraction for children, as does its Burger King restaurant, while across the way is a range of restaurants, the Odeon cinema and the town’s historic dockyard. Inside, as well as places to spend your money, look up to its glorious grade II listed cast and wrought iron structure. The outlet is housed in the historic dockyard’s old boiler house, whose designer built Crystal Palace. Open 10am-6pm Monday to Saturday and until 8pm on Thursdays, and from 11am-5pm on Sunday.
