Demand is brewing for AFTERNOON TEA

The story goes that the terribly English custom of having tea, cakes and teeny sandwiches at four in the afternoon was started in about 1840 by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford to ward off “that sinking feeling between luncheon and supper.” To stave off her hunger pangs, she would order tea and dainty refreshments to be served in her room. Later on she would invite friends to join her at her home for the light meal and the idea was such a success that the habit caught on. The taking of tea gradually spread

from fashionable “at homes” out into society in general and tea rooms and gardens quickly sprang up everywhere. Coffee shops came along even earlier with the first one opening in
