Why a walking workout is good for you

There are few things that can change your life in 30 minutes like walking! Dawn Kingsford sets out on the trail of this flexible route to a happier, healthier you.

Walking is a great way to maintain and improve your general fitness: 30 minutes on foot daily, will boost the health of your heart, strengthen bones, tone muscles and lose weight, to boot! Best of all, walking is highly

accommodating - fitting in with your life, with no need for fancy footwear or formal training and helps reduce your risk of developing heart disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis and some cancers; and boosts mental wellbeing. Not only that, but walking is also a

great way of making new friends. Joining a guided tour will help you find out about your local area, with informative walks offered in many towns and at specific attractions, including historic sites and gardens. If you’ve started walking, then you’ve

already taken your first steps to a healthier, happier you. But it can still be

a challenge to keep going once you’ve started. To help you stay on track:  Make walking part of your everyday life – going on foot instead of by car.

 Set yourself realistic targets, with the aim of staying out longer and going further.

 Find a friend or a walking group to join. If you set specific dates to go with others, you’re less likely to change your mind – it’s also safer than walking alone, and chatting as you go will make time and your feet fly!

 Use a pedometer, step counter or phone app to stay motivated by keeping track of how far you’ve come and how many calories you’ve lost. Aim for about 10,000 steps a day (about five miles), or two hours on foot, including time at home, work and play.
